VOLUNTEER -- LEVEL 1 VS LEVEL 2

There are two levels of volunteer status: Level 1 and Level 2.

Quick Overview of Level 1 vs Level 2 Volunteers: 

All volunteers start out as Level 1 volunteers. 

At most Community Reentry Centers (CRC), both Level 1 and Level 2 volunteers do not need supervision to be alone with residents.  

At non-CRC facilities, Level 1 volunteers need to be with either a Level 2 volunteer or an IDOC staff member to be around residents. 

Level 2 volunteers do not need supervision to be alone with residents. 

What is the main difference between Level 1 and Level 2 volunteers? 

After 10 hours of volunteering at any IDOC facility, volunteers achieve their Level 2 status for Community Reentry Centers (CRC). 

After 24 hours of volunteering at any IDOC facility, volunteers are eligible for their Level 2 status at all IDOC facilities. 

Why should I want to become Level 2 volunteer? 

NOTE: IDOC is currently changing many of their volunteer policies in the later part of 2026.This information is correct as of July 2026. 

CRC FACILITIES

Unless IDOC changes their policy, there is no reason to request to be a Level 2 volunteer at a CRC. 

NON-CRC FACILITIES

To volunteer alone with residents at any non-CRC facility, eligible volunteers must request for their Level 2 badge at each specific non-CRC IDOC facility they desire to volunteer at.

Once your status is approved, you will be issued a 'green badge' with your name and Level 2 status on it. This badge allows you to be alone without residents and move easier around the facility. 

NOTE: When you are with residents alone at a non-CRC facility, you will need to carry a walkie talkie to keep in communication with the control office.  

How do I request Level 2 volunteer status?

To request for your Level 2 volunteer status, you will need to complete a request on the IDOC Web site for EACH facility you want to visit as a Level 2 volunteer.

You will need to list the sites you have visited and the hours you have at each site. You can view that by going to this site's Volunteer Schedule Hours to view your hours.
